Picked up from 5th St again and headed to 10th. A ton of people out today. Everywhere we looked it was someone or a group of people having a good time. I didnt know a museum was in this neighborhood. It looked neat but it was closed so we didnt get a chance to go in. There are some hills in this area as well. Today we didnt run up any. We completed all streets in NW up til 10 St to Orange

Picked up near the Coke plant again and walked in NW all the way to 10th St. Came back around and figured out a neat walk path which we didnt do too much of backtracking. The streets have to be in squares to do so. Anyways came back down a nice set of stairs back onto Shenandoah Ave and back to our car.

I believe I will start to type less and let the pictures do most of the talking. Unless something comes up during our travels Ill just post pics.

Picking up from our last walk in NW. Parked in front of Coka Cola plant and ran up the underpass to Wells Ave. Great view of St Andrews from Patton Ave.
Nice run.

St. Andrews

Saw another red hydrant as well and I had to ask the Chief what these meant. He stated those are brand new hydrants which have not been painted yet. So there will be a time for these hydrants to be a different color or colors. Cool looking church on 5th and Patton ave that has free soup kitchen on Saturdays.

Our 6th

Small church.

On the loop back to Johns car we pass the Coke Plant and walked up to the security officer there and ask if they had tours of the place. She didnt think so, only to the schools. She pointed to a coke machine next to her office which had 20oz cokes for 50cents! So we got two and head back to our car.

Lots of crates.

Alrighty, we started down at the YMCA today and walked up Gainsboro until Cherry Ave. Ran up that hill and looked at some nice views. Headed down to 6th and back around to Gainsboro. Headed back up Madison Ave and noticed a cool log type home.

From Cherry Hill

Log home.

Visited a church near Madison and rang the bell. Saw another red hydrant and continued onwards. Harrison Ave was in rough shape. The road was all tore up and junk everywhere. Everyone seemed nice who we saw in the area. Didnt see any teenagers though. Walked on Madison and saw this Van pull up and park. After that a lady was driving a car and parked hitting a trash can. The man got out of his van and said "What you doing here white boy". John said hello and hurried off. As I turned to see who said it I noticed it was a friend of mine from the skating days. Quincy and his wife Liz. We talked for a good while catching up and explaining why were doing this walk. He has his own biz now, so if you need some landscaping etc check out his site: http://www.va-majics.webs.com/

Q and L

Another!

Continued on and a dog jumped out and barked at me, but it was nice. Hit Gainsboro again and walked downward towards Johns car on 1st St downtown. On the way we saw a police radar so we decided to see if would work while we ran past it. John highest was 11mph while mine was 13mph. Wasnt too bad of a walk today.

Ok so we didnt start NW yet but we will soon. We decided on a short notice just to finish up the area near my friends house. Started at his house on Wise Ave. and headed towards 13th St. Every hill we see we would run up. We ran up quite a few hills today. On one street we snapped a nice pic of downtown. On a way down from another hilly street this cat just came up to us right and started meowing. So naturally Shane and John would pet it.

Another view

Yeah..yeah

Came across this cool wall along Kirk Ave. Shane had to stand on it. The wall to me didnt fit in with the surrounding settings. Headed down to 13th again and then back up Tazewell. Not much going on in the neighborhood but we did a ton of cats today.

Shanes Wall

Another cat

KK and John
So we basically ended up on Dale Ave and started back towards Shanes house to our Jeep. On the way we knocked out Church Ave and came across the wall again. Shane and I decided to walk on top of the wall all the way down Kirk. KK took a few pics. After jumping off the end we headed back and ate at Arbys.

We are hopefully going to start the NW section this week. So we decided to start near Hotel Roanoke. Parked on Jefferson St in KKs new Jeep (borrowed) and hit Gilmer. Hit 2nd St and walked behind the Civic Center area. Finally passed KKs place of employment. My pedometer kept on falling off my foot due to it being broken anyways. We decided to address the situation about Johns steps/miles being more than mine. We did a stride test and mine was about 8 steps off while Johns was about 12 extra steps off. I will have to get a new one today sometime.

The area

Near the Civic Center

Walked by and visited the St. Andrews Church. Nice piece of architecture. Saw a few kids playing around in the field and took a few pics of the church and views.

Headed on down to Patton Ave and checked out the Gainsboro Library. Ive always liked this place. Very neat as well. We checked out the new "Garden" in the back and took a little break. Also visited the creepy Claytor Medical Clinic.

Continued our walk towards Hotel Roanoke and the O Winston Museum. Very nice areas. Walked by the N&W apartments. Discussing about living here and John walked into some friends that worked with him back in the day.

Hit Henry St and saw the Lincoln Theater. I need to find out what this place is. Its next to the Dumas Center and some cooking school. Continued back to Jefferson and headed back to the jeep.
